Elio Elephant Amigurumi Free Crochet Pattern & Tutorial
Meet Elio: The Big-Eared Elephant Amigurumi with a Big Heart
A Free Intermediate Crochet Pattern for a Cuddly Companion
There’s something magical about elephants, isn’t there? I remember being a little girl, completely captivated by stories of gentle giants with ears big enough to hear the world's secrets. That memory has been tucked away in my heart for years, and it came rushing back the other day when I found the perfect shade of soft grey yarn. I just knew I had to create a friend who was a great listener, and that’s how Elio was born. His oversized ears are his signature, designed to flop sweetly and catch all the whispered hopes and dreams you share with him. He's a quiet companion, a steady presence, and I promise that every stitch you put into him will be returned to you in endless, cuddly joy. He's not just a toy; he's a keeper of secrets.

Gathering Your Magical Supplies (Materials & Tools!)
Before we bring our gentle giant to life, let's gather our tools. This isn't just a list; it's the palette for your creation. Choose a grey yarn that feels soft and comforting to the touch — this will be Elio's very soul! The pink is just a tiny whisper of color for the inside of his ears, like a little blush. And those safety eyes? That's where you'll find his sparkle. Don't rush this part; enjoy the feeling of the yarn and the promise of the friend you're about to make.
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn. I used a lovely heather grey for the body and a soft ballet pink for the inner ears.
- Crochet Hook: A 3.0mm (D) hook is perfect for keeping your stitches tight so no stuffing peeks through.
- Safety Eyes: Two 9mm black safety eyes. Make sure they have sturdy washers!
- Filling: A good handful of polyester fiberfill. You want him to be squishy but firm.
- Essentials: A tapestry needle for seaming, stitch markers to save your place, and a sharp pair of scissors.
A Few Stitches to Master
This pattern is a fun little challenge, perfect if you've made a few amigurumi before. If you’ve tackled my little Pikachu Pal pattern, you'll find this a lovely next step! We're mostly using single crochet in a spiral, which is the heartbeat of amigurumi. The only special technique is the 'Invisible Decrease,' which I absolutely swear by. It makes your decreases so much neater and prevents those little gaps. If you haven't used it before, a quick video search will show you how — it’s a game-changer, trust me!

Assembly
This is where the real magic happens! Take your time and pin everything in place before you sew. It makes a world of difference.
- Sew the Body to the Head: Use the long tail from the body and the open stitches to securely attach the body to the bottom of the head.
- Attach the Legs: Sew the legs to the bottom of the body, positioning them so Elio can sit up stably. I usually place them between Rnds 6 and 12 of the body.
- Sew on the Arms: Attach the arms to the sides of the body, just below the neck seam.
- Add the Trunk: Pin the trunk to the center of the face, right below the eyes. Sew it on, adding a tiny bit of stuffing right before you close it up if you want it to have more shape.
- The Ears!: This is the most important part! Fold the top of the ears slightly and sew them to the sides of the head. I like to place them around Rnd 7 from the top, so they have that perfect flop.
- Finishing Touch: Weave in all your ends securely. Your Elio is complete!
Pro Tips
- Stuffing is Key: Don't be shy with the stuffing, especially in the head and body. A well-stuffed amigurumi holds its shape beautifully over time. Use the back of your hook to push it into all the little spaces.
- Eye Placement Matters: Before you snap those washers on, take a moment. Pin the eyes in place and look at the face from every angle. Moving them just one stitch can completely change the expression!
- A Touch of Blush: For an extra sweet look, you can use a little bit of pink blusher or a fabric marker to add rosy cheeks right under his eyes. It adds so much character, just like you'll find on my little Shelly the Serene Turtle.
